Tommy places 5th at Hugh Wilson Memorial 10K
Tommy Lawrence had a strong run at Saturday's Hugh Wilson Memorial 10K in East Kilbride finishing 5th overall and covering the undulating 6.2 mile course in 34.21.

Wright on form at the Edinburgh parkrun 5k
Carnegie's Andrew Wright clocked a very fast 15.34 at Saturday's Edinburgh parkrun 5k placing an impressive 3rd overall. There was an excellent turnout of 20 Carnegie members at the event which attracted a field of 169 runners.

Conditions for the 7th Edinburgh parkrun were not ideal with an overnight frost leaving the course icy in places but on a positive note there was no wind for the runners to contend with.

John Hargreaves was the 2nd Harrier to finish completing his first parkrun in 16.40 in 6th position overall. Iain Taylor clocked 17.14 in 9th place (2nd M40) and leads the overall points table after seven events. Stevie Ogg timed at 17.50 (11th) and William Hargreaves was 17th in 18.20.

In the ladies race, Gail Murdoch sped round the flat and fast course in a personal best of 20.31 finishing 2nd lady overall followed by Grace MacKenzie who also notched up a PB placing 7th lady in 21.10. Helena Sim enjoyed a good first outing at the parkrun finishing 8th lady in 21.21 while Yvette Wilson was 10th lady in 22.22. Alison West improved her 5k best at the parkrun to 22.55 placing the leading F50 for the second week running.

There were excellent runs from Frazer Munro and Robert Milton who despite the slippy underfoot conditions clocked 19.11 (28th) and 19.17 (33rd) respectively. Niall Wilson broke the 20 minute barrier timing at 19.50 (41st), Tom Spry was 50th (20.29), David Greig was 58th (20.49) and Bill Duff was the leading M60 in a new parkrun best of 21.05 (64th). Stephen Greer covered his 3.1 mile run in 21.06 (65th), Paul Arnott was 71st in 21.25, Ken Daniels was 105th (3rd M70) in 23.55 and John Milton ran a parkrun best of 25.32 finishing 120th.

33 members of Carnegie Harriers have now taken part in the Edinburgh parkrun which takes place at 9.30am every Saturday morning.

Mud glorious mud at the East District C.C. League
Carnegie Harriers hosted the 2nd event in the 2009/2010 East District Cross Country League in Dunfermline on Sunday afternoon. All the recent wet weather resulted in an incredibly muddy course at the rear of Queen Anne High School which appears to have been very popular by those taking part.

Well done to Phil Smithard for all his hard work as course director and to all our club members who assisted setting, marshalling and dismantling the course.

There was an excellent turnout with forty Carnegie members taking part. In the senior ladies race, Judy Turner was the leading Carnegie runner placing 9th overall in 24.50, Fabienne Thompson was 22nd in 26.39 and Isobel Burnett was 23rd in 26.56. Gail Murdoch was 43rd (28.26), Grace MacKenzie was 44th (28.38), Linda James was 48th (28.55), Helena Sim was 53rd (29.26), Morna Fleming was 57th (30.18), Susan Cederstrom was 61st (31.11) and Yvette Wilson was 69th in 32.05.

Twenty eight Carnegie runners took part in the 8.2km senior men's race and the club's leading finishers were Tommy Lawrence who placed 22nd in 32.36, Ian Stewart who was the leading M50 and 24th overall in 32.44, Lewis Lawson who was 39th in 34.04 and Allan Fotheringham, 40th in 34.13.

Two races for David in two days and in two continents!
Carnegie's David Greig ran a personal best of 20.28 at Saturday's Edinburgh parkrun 5k before jetting across the Atlantic. On Sunday morning, David was back in action but this time in Central Park, New York clocking 28.14 at the Race to Deliver 4 Mile Road Race.

Thirteen Harriers took part in the 6th Edinburgh parkrun 5k on Saturday morning which attracted a record field of 213 runners. Iain Taylor ran his fastest parkrun so far covering the 3.1 mile course in 17.09 placing 10th overall. Alex Keenan made his Carnegie debut finishing 16th in 17.36 and Frazer Munro ran a personal best of 18.59 (33rd).

Robert Milton ran his fastest 5k of the year in 19.12 (41st), Kieran Morgan equalled his personal best clocking 20.26 and Catriona McCracken was the 6th lady in 20.51. Paul Arnott on his parkrun debut clocked 21.02 (77th), Bill Duff was the leading M60 (21.33), Alison West was the leading F50 (23.08) and Ken Daniels was the fastest M70 in 23.27. John McArthur improved his parkrun time by over a minute timing at 24.56 and John Milton finished in 29.09.

East District C.C. League - This Sunday from 1pm
Carnegie Harriers are hosting the 2nd event in the 2009/2010 East District Cross Country League this Sunday afternoon from Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline. This event was staged at this venue back in January this year and proved to be a muddy but very popular course. With all the recent rain, Sunday's races are likely to be a muddy affair once again so look out your long spikes!

Car parking, changing and refreshments will be available at Queen Anne High School and we ask all runners to remove all muddy footwear before entering the school building.

The races will start at the following times;

1300 hours - Under 11 Girls and Boys Race (distance not more than 1,600m)
1315 hours - Under 13 Girls and Boys Race (distance not more than 3,000m)
1335 hours - Senior, Junior, Masters Ladies and U17 Men (distance not more than 6,000m)
1410 hours - Under 15 Girls and Boys Race & U17 Women (distance not more than 4,500m)
1430 hours - Senior, Junior, Masters Men (distance not more than 10,000m)

There is no entry fee to take part in this event which is a counter in our cross country grand prix. All Carnegie runners wear race number '28' and this number must be marked 28V if you are a male aged over 40 and 28L if you are a female and 28LV if you are a female aged 35 or over. All race numbers will be given out on the day by Mike Harvey (men) and Fabienne Thompson (ladies).

Seventeen Harriers contest the Braid Hills Cross Country
The 3rd event in our Cross Country Grand Prix took place on Saturday afternoon at the Braid Hills Cross Country Races. The event is organised by Edinburgh University Hares & Hounds and attracts a large number of students from across the UK.

The ladies race over an undulating three mile course attracted a field of 117 runners with Fabienne Thompson finishing the leading Carnegie athlete in 29th position and first veteran. Fabienne clocked a time of 21.30 and was closely followed home by Isobel Burnett in 36th (21.57) place. Grace MacKenzie's fine form continued finishing 49th in 22.53 putting her into the lead in our Cross Country Grand Prix.

Helena Sim had a strong run around the energy sapping course clocking 23.49 (66th) while Yvette Wilson (82nd in 24.40), Linda James (86th in 24.53), Morna Fleming (98th in 25.28) and Lesley Halstead (112th in 27.52) all enjoyed fine runs.

Ian Johnston placed 76th (39.42) in the six mile men's race and is our leading male in the Cross Country Grand Prix. Peter Simpson finished 96th in 40.57, Niall Wilson was 132nd in 42.39 and John Fulham finished 168th (44.21) with the Carnegie team placing 11th.

Ian McKinnell (193rd in 47.01), Kieran Morgan (195th in 47.01), Stephen Greer (196th in 47.01), Paul Arnott (201st in 48.18) and Steve Whalley (206th in 49.24) completed the Carnegie contingent who all enjoyed a great day on the country.

Pauline places 2nd lady at Glen Clova Half Marathon
The annual Glen Clova Half Marathon attracted a field of 250 runners who braved the wet conditions around the 13.1 mile course from Kirriemuir. Carnegie's Pauline Walker in her first competitive road race since the Commonwealth 24 Hour Challenge ran an impressive 1.33.02 to finish 2nd lady overall. Gail Murdoch also enjoyed an excellent race placing 3rd lady in 1.35.48. Backed up by Fiona Rennie who clocked 1.55.56, our Carnegie ladies placed 4th team overall. Steven King also took part finishing 16th overall in 1.26.48.

Excellent Carnegie turnout at the Edinburgh parkrun 5k
Carnegie Harriers were represented by ten members at Saturday's Edinburgh parkrun 5K from Cramond. The field of 151 runners faced blustery conditions along the exposed promenade course but the rain kept at bay.

Iain Taylor continued his consistent recent form placing 3rd overall in 17.13 with Mike Harvey on his parkrun debut finishing 5th in 17.34. Alan Manson swapped the hills for this fast and flat 5k clocking a time of 19.20 (20th). Robert Milton sneaked under the 20 minute barrier timing at 19.59 in 26th position and Tom Spry on his first parkrun clocked 20.17 in 28th position.

Congratulations to Catriona McCracken who placed 2nd lady in an excellent time of 20.56 (39th overall). Kieran Morgan completed his 5th consecutive parkrun covering the 3.1 mile course in 21.10 (45th) while David Greig placed 47th in 21.18.

Well done to Lauren White who on her Carnegie debut clocked 23.04 (71st overall) and John Milton who timed at 25.49 in 102nd position.

Steven is the King of the Hills
Congratulations to Steven King and Alison West who are our 2009 Hill Running Grand Prix champions. Our popular series of hill races saw a huge turnout of 60 club members take part in this year's Grand Prix which featured 15 events with the best 9 to count. The opening event was back in February at the Carnethy 5 and it reached its conclusion at the Tinto Hill Race on Saturday afternoon.

Steven King has been in great shape on the hills this year and wins the men's Grand Prix title with 420 points. Allan Macaulay has also enjoyed a superb season and he places 2nd male overall with 406 points with our hill running captain Andy Sim finishing 3rd male with 400 points. The M40 award has been won by Alan Manson who placed 4th overall on 395 points and Phil Smithard was the leading M50 (13th overall) on 210 points.

Very well done to Alison West who is our ladies Grand Prix winner with 442 points. This is Alison's 10th Hill Running Grand Prix ladies title having first won the Grand Prix back in 1995! Morna Fleming places 2nd lady on 425 points and Fabienne Thompson is 3rd lady with 349 points. The F40 award has been won by Helena Sim (7th overall) on 142 points and the F50 award by Isobel Burnett on 144 points (6th overall).

The hill running awards will be presented at the King Malcolm Hotel, Dunfermline on Sunday 6th December at our annual awards evening.

Superb turnout at our Tribute run for George
Many thanks to all our club members who travelled to the Tinto Hill Race on Saturday afternoon who took part or provided encouragement on the hill at our Tribute Run for George.

The 1500ft climb up and down Tinto was lit up with the resplendent orange and green colours of Carnegie Harriers with thirty four members taking part.

Tommy Lawrence was in great form with a good climb to the summit followed by a rapid descent covering the 4.4 mile course in around 34.36 in 8th position. Pete Simpson who have been very impressive on the hills this year was the 2nd Harrier to finish placing 22nd and leading M50 in 36.26. The 3rd Carnegie runner to reach the finish was experienced hill runner Sandy Bennet who finished 27th in 37.20 while Richie Cunningham was 34th in 37.54. Peter Humphreys enjoyed a speedy descent reaching the finishing line in 40.08 (60th) and Iain Taylor made a rare appearance in a hill race placing 64th in 40.30. Steven King beacme our 2009 men's Hill Running Grand Prix champion completed his 9th counting event in 40.47 (71st).

Fabienne Thompson was the leading Carnegie lady, winning the F40 award in 47.47 while Alison West secured her 10th Hill Running Grand Prix title reaching the finish in 49.47. Fast improving Grace McKenzie enjoyed an excellent run on her hill debut clocking 50.35 and Pauline Walker posted a time of 52.22 for her 4.4 mile effort. Helena Sim recorded her fastest ever Tinto run timing at 53.05 which included a 16 minute descent from the summit! Very well done to Gail Murdoch who completed her run in 54.02 and Joanna Deighan who on her debut hill run finished in 57.58.

Tom Bowie was one of the leading M60 finishers in 45.37 (144th) and there were many other excellent runs including John Fulham who ran a Tinto best of 46.08, Paul Arnott (48.28) and Allan Brannigan(48.35). Well done also to Bill Duff, Ken Daniels and Iain Taylor who completed the Saturday double of running the Edinburgh Parkrun 5k in the morning before taking part at Tinto in the afternoon.

Congratulations to Sandy MacDonald who was the leading Under 14 boy in the junior Tinto Hill Race.

Nine Harriers complete the 4th Edinburgh parkrun 5k
A field of 199 runners took part in the 4th Edinburgh parkrun 5K on Saturday morning along Silverknowes promenade from Cramond. Iain Taylor ran a quick 17.13 along the out and back course placing 8th overall and 2nd M40 while Ian Johnston on his parkrun debut clocked 18.14 placing 15th.

Keiran Morgan was the 3rd Carnegie runner to finish in a time of 20.50 (43rd) and it was good to see Jim Robb (56th in 21.25) back in competitive action. Bill Duff completed his first parkrun in 22.00 (71st) and Ken Daniels was the leading M70 finishing in 24.04 (106th).

Clive Cable clocked a 5k time of 24.29 (108th) while Mhairi MacKechnie recorded a personal best of 24.39 placing 110th. John Milton finished 130th in 130th.

The 5th Edinburgh parkrun 5k takes place on Saturday 14th November at 9.30am. Further details can be found HERE and please ensure you register before 6pm on the Friday before your first ever parkrun.

Time Trial success for Lawrence and Murdoch
Carnegie Harriers hosted their Three Mile Time Trial on Thursday evening attracting a good field of over 20 runners. Tommy Lawrence was in top form rocketing around the undulating two lap course in 15.37 finishing in 1st position. Pitreavie's Barry Davie placed 2nd overall in 16.46 while Carnegie's Richie Cunningham ran a personal best of 17.41 in 3rd position and 1st M40.

Gail Murdoch was the leading lady reaching the finish near Pitreavie Castle in 20.06 with fast improving Grace Mackenzie knocking over three minutes from her previous best time placing 2nd lady in 20.31. New club member Annette Bunyan was in good form recording a PB of 21.56 finishing 3rd lady.

Several members set PB's including Niall Wilson (5th in 18.44), Derek Cassells (6th in 18.46), Allan Brannigan (11th in 19.39), Kieran Morgan (12th in 20.05), Gordon Rae (15th in 20.49), Mark Gray (19th in 22.05) and Simon Ferguson (20th in 23.06).

Well done to everyone who took part and to Paul Arnott, Colin Reid and James Rowsome who all assisted with the time trial organisation.

Our 2009 time trials have proved very popular as follows;

January - 15 finishers
March - 22 finishers
June - 22 finishers
September - 23 finishers
November - 21 finishers

Andrew Wright posted the year's fastest time of 14.58 in September and Gail Murdoch was the fastest lady clocking 19.59 in March. The next time trial will take place in January 2010.

SHR Hill Running Championship 2009
The 2009 Championship reached its conclusion last Saturday at the 6th and final counting event at Meall a'Bhuachaille. Very well done to the hill running section of our club who have enjoyed a highly successful season.

Congratulations to Andy Symonds who finished runner-up in the SHR Hill Running Championship with 159 points and to Andrew Wright who was 4th overall on 147 points. The 2009 overall winner was Shettleston's Tom Owens with 159 points.

Peter Simpson has been in superb form on the hills and won the bronze medal in the M50 category. Carnegie's men placed an excellent 3rd team overall behind Carnethy and Shettleston Harriers along with placing 4th equal in the M40 team category.

Alison West enjoyed a good season placing 3rd F50 and our Carnegie ladies finished 9th team overall.

Judy Turner places 2nd at the Lasswade Cross Country
Torrential rain resulting in a very muddy course didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the eighteen Harriers who took part in Sunday's Lasswade Open Cross Country Races in Gorebridge.

Judy Turner excelled in the ladies race placing a superb 2nd overall in 27.12. Fabienne Thompson covered the energy sapping course in 29.00 finishing 8th and backed up by 9th placed Alison Whyte (30.23) our ladies finished 2nd team behind Hunters Bog Trotters.

Tommy Lawrence was the leading Carnegie runner in the senior men's race covering the 10K course in 38.29 placing 7th overall. Dennis Howett found the mud to his liking finishing 17th in 42.58 and Ian Johnston was the 2nd M50 placing 18th overall in 43.06. The Carnegie men's team finished 2nd overall behind Edinburgh AC.

In the under 13 girl's race Aurelie Thompson finished 24th in 20.14.
